Hydroponics Automation

Grant of Rs. 8 Lakh as Co-PI for Design and development of a fully automated Solar Powered Raspberry Pi based hydroponic growing system with Aerator/Temperature/Water-Level monitoring and control system with web functionalities from IIT Ropar. Tasks I was responsible for:-

  • Design and fabrication of Hydroponic growing setup.
  • Design of Raspberry Pi shield for sensor interface.
  • Calibration of sensors and integration into system.
  • Calibration of dosing pumps and integration into system.
  • Hydroponics automation using MYCODO Automation library.
  • Scaled version of the system with 120 plants is under development.

Mycodo based automated hydroponic growing system with following features is developed and tested:-

  • Place for 10 plants
  • Water temperature control
  • pH and EC control
  • Automated dosing of nutrient solutions
  • Automated lighting
  • Webcam based monitoring
  • Email alerts for pH and low water levels

Hardware details:-

  • Atlas Scientific peristaltic pumps
  • Atlas scientific pH, EC, flow and temperature senor
  • LCD display and buzzer for notification
  • Air quality monitoring using HTU21D and MH-Z19B
  • Chiller for water temperature control
  •  Relays for controlling lighting, flow pump and chiller
  • Float sensor for water level monitoring
  • Aerator

Raspberry Pi Shield

A Raspberry Pi shield is designed and fabricated for connecting the sensors (pH, EC, HTU21D, MH-Z19B, float sensor, etc.) and output devices (peristaltic pumps, LCD display, notification buzzer, Electrical board connector). Shield is designed using KiCad, and is available for download to anyone. Please click the blue DOWNLOAD button below to download the KiCad files. Same shield can be used to connect any other sensor working on i2c communication protocol.
